August 2017’s Wales Home News

by: Rebecca Taylor

The month of August meant more awesomeness throughout the Home. Some activities and offices were moved at the end of the month due to our renovations, which are progressing well. In addition to our usual monthly activities which include carpet bowling, bingo, church services and storytelling, here are some of this month’s highlights.

On the 2nd, the Masonic Lodge hosted a barbecue at the Wales Home for all residents and employees. We would like to thank them for this special treat. Following the delicious lunch of hotdogs, hamburgers, potato salad, coleslaw, lemonade and ice cream treats, a dance was held in the main dining room.

Zootherapy was held in the nursing care units on the morning of the 3rd. Amongst the special feathered and furred visitors were some baby rabbits. This month we introduced some new tools and games on the nursing care units’ floors including a game with scents, and puppy and kitty play with interactive animals which are battery powered and designed to act like real animals. Our puppy’s name is Horace and our cat’s name is Wales.

Residents and their drivers enjoyed a chance to see the Scott Woods show at Richmond Regional High School on the 8th. A trip to Brasserie Brompton was held on the 15th for lunch. This month’s birthday party was hosted by the Cleveland Women’s Institute on the afternoon of the 16th on the 4th floor. Happy birthday to everyone who celebrated. A musical trio played for residents in the living room on the afternoon of the 17th. The movie Big Miracle was shown in the living room on the afternoon of the 24th and movie-style popcorn was also served.

Our annual golf tournament was held on the 24th at the Longchamps Golf Course. It was another successful fundraising event that included eighteen holes of golf, a banquet supper and a silent auction.

On the afternoon of the 25th, I had the opportunity to offer an activity to the residents. I hosted a book launch for my fictional novel The Moderna Way, in the main dining room. Residents and visitors had the opportunity to find out about the book that I began working on, even before my career at the Wales Home began. I feel extremely grateful to be able to celebrate this important milestone in my life with them and to have their support and friendship. At the launch refreshments of punch and cookies were served. The napkins with horseshoes on them went with the book’s western theme and door prizes (a copy of the book) were won by Joan Brotzman, Carole Quinlan, and Jeane Corey.

Our sympathies are extended to the family and friends of Hazel Carson who passed away this month. Best wishes are extended to Peter Lanigan who has moved to be closer to friends.
