TRAVEL TALES:
One of our recent activities was called "Travel Tales" wherein residents shared their personal journeys. Here are severel of the stories that were communicated during this exercise on Norton 3 with Noémi Blom. Thank you to those of you who participated!
- Margaret Bradley travelled by plane to England and Ireland to visit her grandparents' birthplaces. She has also been to Toronto.
- Winnie Wright travelled extensively. Her first plane ride was to British Columbia to visit her niece. She took her around Vancouver Island and showed her where celebrities lived. She also crossed the border into Washington State and went up Mount St. Helens and looked into the volcano's crater, which made her dizzy; she felt like she was going to fall! Winnie honeymooned in New York City, where she did bus tours. She also stopped in Long Island and visited huge white duck farms. She says the ducks looked like snow! She also traveled across Canada to visit family in Calgary for her son's wedding and Ontario, including Toronto and Niagara Falls. Finally, Winnie traveled quite a bit within Québec with the Ayer's Cliff Seniors' Club. They have done day trips to Québec City, Trois Rivières, and Montréal, among other locations.
- Winnie's travel wish is to visit England and the Maritimes, especially P.E.I.
- Pauline Daignault has been to Old Orchard Beach three or four times. She recommends going to the Winter Carnival in Québec City to watch the Christmas Parade. She said this pageant is the most amazing display she has ever seen!
- Pauline's travel wish is to visit Paris and Las Vegas.
- Gilbert Verhoef is from the Netherlands. He came to Canada by boat, but has returned many times by plane to visit friends and family. He has also visited the surrounding countries like Germany. He frequented many states including Florida and Tennessee. He told Noémi that there was a railroad behind his hotel in Tennessee, so he could not sleep!
- Gilbert's travel wish is to visit France.
- Rose-Alma Paquette traveled across Québec and the United States.
- Gerald Armstrong traveled extensively; he was in the army for fifteen to sixteen months, based in Québec. When the war finished in 1945, another war began in the Pacific. Back then, soldiers were not told where they were being stationed; they simply followed orders. Gerry and his colleagues got on the train in St-Jean sur Richelieu, picked up some people in Montréal, Kingston, Toronto, Winnipeg, Regina, and Calgary before arriving in British Columbia. This trip marked his first time seeing the Rocky Mountains. He remembers the train starting with only four or five cars and ending with fourteen passenger cars with additional luggage and supply cars. At times, when exiting tunnels, they could still see their final cars entering. Gerry also visited Florida on many occasions and stayed with a couple friends who had a home in a large, enclosed 430-home community. You could take your bike and ride around the area, which would take an hour to cover. Gerry would bike in the zdark when the air was most fresh. Gerry has also been to Myrtle Beach for a couple weeks on severl occasions. He knew quite a few people from Sherbooke who visited there, including Wyatt Savage! At night, they would play bridge together. He also recalls that the restaurants were very good. Finally, Gerry traveled across Ontario, the United States, and the Eastern Seabord. He recommends visiting Nova Scotia in the fall when there are fewer tourists.
- Dora McCourt visited New Hampshire to enjoy the beach, but mostly travalled the Maritimes to visit New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. She says Nova Scotia in July is her favourite place because of the abundance of flowers.
- Angus McElrea traveled across Canada by train. His father worked on the railroad, so he had a free pass. He went with his two sisters and they each had $30.00 to spend. They stopped in Winnipeg and other places before arriving in Victoria, British Columbia. He spent a summer in Prince Edward Island and ate a lot of lobster! Angus has also traveld the United States, including Cincinnati, for work with Hydro Québec. He also visited Hampton Beach to watch dog races and Newport.
