Marie-Christine and Carol Ann's Message
THE ACTIVITY DEPARTMENT WANTS TO KEEP YOU ON THE MOVE:
Happy January and Happy New Year! Can you believe we are already in 2021? I think you will agree that 2020 will be a year to remember and one that some will wish to forget. We have reflected a lot through this fast-paced year and we feel privileged to be working here. We care so much for the residents and to know that we are their main contacts to the "outside" world is an honour. There were many periods when loved ones were not permitted to visit due to safety restrictions. We know how difficult this time has eben for many of you; our heartstrings are forever changed by these oh-so-human experiences. We must forge on together, though. We will do what we can to keep our residents happy and healthy.
BIRTHDAY TEA:
January's Birthday Tea will be modified to one-on-one visits in the afternoon of Wednesday, January 20th. Although we cannot host a regular party due to the pandemic, we received lovely cards from the Richmond/Melbourne Young Women's Institute. Thank you to thos who helped make this happen and a very Happy Birthday to those celebrating this month.

NATIONAL HAT DAY:
Friday, January 15th is National Hat Day! This day is set aside to wear and enjoy the hat of your choice and style. Hats have wonderfully diverse shapes, sizes, and colours; there is one to fit any head or personality.
Hats can be used to make a statement or to promote a cause or product. Back in 1797, the top hat's introduction almost caused a riot. The top hat was first worn by James Heatherington in London, England. As Heatherington strolled through the streets displaying his hat, crowds gathered and people began to push and shove. Heatherington was fined for "going about in a manner that frightened timid people."
Hats also have logical uses, of course. Helmets, for example, offer protection. Some hats keep our heads warm, some keep the sun out of our eyes. National Hat Day, however, is not designed for practicality; this day is a chance to display your favourite headgear. We suggest you wear many different hats over the course of the day.
Did you know that more body heat is lost through your head than any other body part? Wearing a hat, therefore, goes a long way towards staying warm on a cold winter's day. Please wear you favourite hat today!

NATIONAL PUZZLE DAY:
Friday, January 29th is National Puzzle Day! Please do not be puzzled by today; National Puzzle Day honours puzzles of various sizes, shapes, and forms. Crossword puzzles are by far the most common. Sudoku, a number puzzle, is the most recent puzzle rage and pleas do not forget the ever-popular picture puzzles. There are easy puzzles and expert puzzles; they fit the needs of people at different levels.
Puzzles are a favourite passtime for millions of people, young and old. So what is with this fascination for puzzles? There are numerous reason for their popularity; for many, doing puzzles is fun. Some people like the challenge of graduating to ever more complex and difficult levels. For others, puzzles kill time and eliminate boredom. Others still do puzzles to keep their minds sharp or learn new words.
Whatever piques your interest, please spend National Puzzle Day doing puzzles. On this day, you can do crosswords, picture puzzles, Sudoku, or any other kind of puzzle you prefer. Did you know doing puzzles helps keep your brain sharp and improve memory, which in turn helps avoid dementia.
