Carol Ann's Message
THE ACTIVITY DEPARTMENT WANTS TO KEEP YOU ON THE MOVE:
Greetings and happy July! I most likely repeat myself at this time of year when I say things like, "Where has the time gone?" Today is dark and dreary, but most of you will probably agree, we so need the rain. I think our plants will very much appreciate some precipitation. I hope this Chatter finds you healthy and enjoying your summer so far.
BIRTHDAY TEA:
July's Birthday Tea will again be modified to one-on-one visits on the afternoon of Wednesday, July 15th. Although we are not able to host a regular birthday, our friends at the St. Anne's in Richmond provided lovely cards and small gifts for the residents. Thank you to those who make these donations happen. Thank you also to Grace Johnston and Lynne Fortier for the handmade cards last month; your thoughtfulness is so appreciated!
CANADA DAY:
Wednesday, July 1st is Canada Day! This day was created to celebrate Canadian nationalism, heritage, and pride. Canada became a self-governing nation on July 1st, 1867 with the passing of the British North America (BNA) Act by the British Parliament. The holiday was originally called "Dominion Day;" the name was changed by the Canadian Parliament on October 27th, 1982.

The Kitchen staff will offer a barbecue and Mary and I will provide various activities on the units. Please refer to the Weekly Activity Calendars for times and locations.
NATIONAL FRIED CHICKEN DAY:
Monday, July 6th is National Fried Chicken Day! Today, enjoy crisp, tasty, finger-licking-good fried chicken. Fried chicken is one of Canada's favourite meals. Sure, we know that fried foods are not good for us, but fried chicken tastes so good! We just cannot resist consuming this dish on a regular basis. There is just one thing you need to do to celebrate this day: eat some fried chicken.
Chicken trivia:
- When fried chicken was first cooked and served, the dish was a sign of wealth.
- The chicken came before the egg. At least, we think it did.
- Fear of chickens is called alektrophobia.
- Modern domestic chickens are descended from the red jungle fowl of India and Southeast Asia.
- More than half of chicken entrées ordered in restaurants are fried.
- KFC was first known as "Sanders Court and Buffet."
- Chickens were originally domesticated and bred for cockfighting, not for food.
- One chicken's lifetime waste is enough to run a 100 watt bulb for five hours.

COW APPRECIATION DAY:
Wednesday, July 15th is Cow Appreciation Day, and that is no bull! It is, however, something to "moo"' about.
As I began my research for this day, I talked to my daughter about plans for this page. I was intending to comment kindly about what cows give us. She convinced me to simply talk about dairy products.
If you want to celebrate Cow Appreciation Day at the Wales, I invite you to take a stroll to our Petting Zoo, Ferme Frosttie Farm brought a lovely Highland cow named Rose to stay with us for the summer! Here is a photo of her:
Hammock Day:
Wednesday, July 22nd is Hammock Day! Summer is in full swing, so the time to slow down and relax is here. During the summer, there is no better place to slow down and relax than a hammock in a tree's shade.
Hammock Day is appropriately celebrated right in the middle of summer's dog days, which range from July 3rd to August 11th. This day exists to to enjoy the season and relax as much as possible.

national cheesecake day:
Thursday, July 30th is National Cheesecake Day! Cheesecake is one of the tastiest treats! Despite being rich, high calorie, and cholesterol-filled, cheesecake is a very popular dessert. Why? Because it tastes so good and can be enjoyed plain or with your favourite fruit topping.
Enjoy this day with a piece of cheesecake along with your favourite topping. If you have time, make your own! Happy National Cheesecake Day!

exercise class:
The Therapy Department has resumed exercise classes on residential units. CHSLD units get exercise through activities like balloon toss and big ball games.
activity department:
Several changes have taken place in the Activity Department. Vanessa Johnston assumed her role as Clinical Aide on Norton 1 and, until Marie-Christine returns from maternity leave at the end of August, Mary Evans and Noémi Blom are sharing her Monday to Friday shifts in the CHSLD. Zach Fry, a Bishop's Psychology student, is here full-time during the week. He and I will be alternating four-hour increments on Saturdays. I wil be doing scheduled activities and he will be taking special requests and doing follow-ups with specific residents. If you have any questions, please contact me.
friday treats:
As residents are unable to congregate, we now offer Friday treats in the afternoons on the units. Thank you to the Kitchen personnel for homemade goodies and to Jean-Marc for purchasing special treats like ice cream and cookies.
sunday church service:
We are aweare of pastoral services' importance at the Wales. We have been working diligently to make these functions happen. A Sunday Church Service is offered at 2:30 p.m. on Channel Eighty (TV Tours). A Catholic service is offered afterwards at 3:00 p.m. Live church services have not yet resumed at the Wales.
virtual visits:
To break isolation, we offer FaceTime, Google Duo, Messenger, Skype, and Teams as a way to contact family members. If you would like to schedule a visit, please contact Chase.
tuck shop:
The Tuck Shop is now open with scheduled times. Please refer to the schedule below:
earth day:
We had a phase three of Earth Day planting last month when we transferred our plants outdoors. Now, we merely have to wait and see how they do in their new home; we will keep you posted! Congratulations to those who participated in this fun project.
